Healthcare Support Home Care is an approved Bobby Dodd Institute vendor for Family Support Services in Georgia.

If that sentence means nothing to you yet, you are not alone. Family Support is one of the most useful programmes in this state and one of the least explained, so here is the plain version.

What Family Support Services actually is

Bobby Dodd Institute (BDI) is an Atlanta non-profit that has worked with people with disabilities for decades. One of the things it administers is Family Support Services, funded through the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD).

The programme exists to support families caring for someone with an intellectual or developmental disability at home — the practical, day-to-day cost of keeping a household going when one member needs more help than the others.

Families access services through approved vendors. We are one of them.

Who qualifies for Bobby Dodd Institute Family Support

According to BDI, Family Support Services is for caregivers of an individual aged 3 and up with a developmental and/or intellectual disability.

That is a much wider door than most families assume. Two things worth saying plainly:

  • It is not only for children. Adults with an intellectual or developmental disability qualify too, and families of adults are the ones most often surprised by that.
  • It is not the same as the elderly waiver. If you have been reading about CCSP and SOURCE and finding that none of it quite fits your son or your sister, this may be why — you were reading about the wrong programme.

BDI publishes the current eligibility and application details on its own site, and those are the details to trust over anybody's summary, including ours: Bobby Dodd Institute — Family Support Services

How to apply

BDI takes applications through its own form. You do not need to go through a home care agency first, and you do not need to have chosen a vendor before you apply.

Apply first. Choose a vendor after. In that order, because the funding decision is BDI's and DBHDD's, not ours.

Where a home care agency fits

Once a family is approved and working out how to use their support, that is where a vendor like us comes in — trained caregivers, in the home, on a schedule that fits around school, work and everything else a family is already carrying.

Every one of our caregivers is background-checked and trained before they reach your door, and our care plans are written and reviewed by a Registered Nurse. We are licensed, bonded and insured in the state of Georgia, and we serve twenty Georgia counties across metro Atlanta and beyond.

If you are not sure this is you

Call us and describe the situation. If Family Support is not the right route we will say so, and we will try to point you at what is — the elderly waiver, a different DBHDD programme, or a service that is not ours at all.

That is not salesmanship. A family pointed somewhere useful remembers it.
